My first feature this week was Sun City Girls. They are one of the freakiest bands of all time featuring the likes of Alan Bishop, Richard Bishop and Charles Gocher. They are American underground outsider revolutionaries.

Check out Alan Bishop’s record label called Sublime Frequencies for some of the best world music transferred to CD ever.

This week, I did a feature on the CD86 compilation. It is the remastered/expanded CD version of the original classic cassette put out by NME magazine in 1986. It is a great account for independent music after the first rush of punk and post punk releases which kicked off the early 80s. If you ever come across the original cassette, pick it up, it is soooo rare…

Thanks for reading everyone!
We did a jazz feature this week as I got a great Coltrane box set in the mail from Veronica’s dad. It is a great mix of stuff that was from the period in Coltrane’s career before he starting fronting his own bands. The other reason we featured jazz is because our friend Andrew Waller of Breaking the Tethers is no longer hosting the show after us due to the...

FEB 1/6/2/0/1/0
Hi everyone, this was our playlist from Feb 16. We got into a discussion about supporting local music before our show started, so we made an effort to showcase more local music, especially this time around.
I did one feature on the “I Ate Your Legs” compilation. It is a compilation of mostly local area Vancouver music, put out by Thankless Records, a Vancouver based record label.

I promise to make the blog good again. We won’t just dump our playlists anymore, we’ll try to give as much background info as possible.
I started the show off with the New York Jazz compilation Wildflowers. It was a compilation based around the loft performances in the Soho and Noho districts of Manhattan. There were near 100 musicians caught on these recordings which were put out on 5 LPs...

101 recordings to hear from 2009
This is my (Whitney) list of recordings from this year that I think are worthy of checking out. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few here and there, but I tried my hardest to look back to the beginning of the year as well. I haven’t included any reissues or compilations either. That’s a different discussion all together.

Veronica was in Vancouver this week to visit her parents for an early Christmas. She gets to have two Christmases! So spoiled! It meant that this was a completely Black Lode show!!! Except for one song. See if you can spot it.
This week’s features included Not Not Fun’s compilation called “My Estorgeneration” which features on an all female track listing. There’s...
December 8 Playlist
Ooops, we’re late on this one. I thought I posted it already! Sorry!
Veronica decided to do a sociological experiment and pick albums at random to see how many of them she would end up liking. So many times, albums are chosen because of how they look and many get discarded because they don’t look very interesting. We heard a few gems that we might not have chosen solely on the appearance of...
December First
This was the best show ever. I’m sure I’ve said that in the past and I’ll probably say it again in the future.
I did a feature on Soundway Records. Soundway is a UK based label specializing in rare grooves from around the world, most of which have gone unreleased to North American or European ears until now.

Last week’s playlist. We are now caught up!
This is our first show in the brand new CJSW studio! It was also my first time seeing it in person. My impressions… It’s great! It’s totally swanky here. Sure, I’ll miss the old studio. It had its charm, but this studio just smells fresh. It looks sharp.
In order to ring in our first show in the new studio, we decided to play only songs off debut...

POST FUNDING DRIVE
HI EVERYONE!!!
First of all, thank you soooooooOOOOOoooooo much to everyone that pledged! We blew away our show goal of $500 and when we realized that goal was perhaps too low, we doubled our goal, which we also beat!
Not very many overnight shows break $1000. We can’t thank you enough for being so generous.
We’ll be back Tuesday morning for our usual programming goodness!

What happened on October 20
Hi readers+listeners
This is our playlist for October 20, which also happened to be Veronica’s birthday.
Veronica’s laptop deleted our playlist from last week, so we won’t be able to post it. We are terribly sorry.
I started the show off with a set of “Chinese Experimental Music” which is a four CD anthology put out by Sub Rosa. It is an amazing look at the...
October 6 Playlist and Info!!!
Hello, our show this morning was so much fun! We were once again fighting off sickness. Perhaps it is just the time between 2-6 AM that brings on the sniffles and weird stomach sickness.
My first feature of the night was on the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). What a wonderful collective this was. In my opinion (Veronica doesn’t agree) it is some of the most beautifully unsettling...

Ideas Ideas Ideas. So many ideas for sets. Continuing on with my search into independent culture in Canadian cities, I picked up where I left off a few weeks ago with the second installment of Vancouver music. This was partially due to the fact that there is no shortage of great Vancouver music and also because we just came back from a mini-vacay at our other home. I managed to spend some time in...

This week Whitney featured a few things. His first set of music was a tribute to record shopping. Who doesn’t like to shop for new music? It’s the best. Nothing beats sifting through crates of records to find those hidden gems – things priced far too cheaply. They are worth much more to the one that’s buying them than the 8 or 10 dollars they cost. My advice for our record buying listeners, don’t...

After tomorrow’s show, I promise more text, but for now we are much too far behind. This particular editions of the show was our much anticipated nostalgia show. One hour of 1970’s music, one hour of 1980’s, one hour of 1990’s, and a one hour slice of what’s new and exciting. Hope you enjoyed it.

We’ve both been super busy, so I haven’t had time to write anything descent for these older shows UNTIL NOW!

AUGUST 11 PLAYLIST AND INFO
August 11. After last show, Veronica and I began brainstorming some ways that we could make our show better. Some of the ideas and weekly features we came up with were:
-“Cities” - Feature a different Canadian city each week. Play music that would rarely get played outside the city of origin.
-“Record Labels” - Feature new and favourite releases from specific record...
AUGUST 4 (SHOW #5!!!)
This was our fifth ever show! Woweeeeee! I personally thought it was our best yet. Ironically, it was the show that I had the least amount of sleep for. In the past, the less sleep Whitney gets, the worse my contribution to the show seems to be. Go figure. Maybe the Universe was trying to even out my day since the mechanical difficulties on my airplane from Winnipeg held me up in Regina for too...

Whitney's Notes
Just a couple things. Just wanted to point out some common themes in my selections that I didn’t notice until after the fact.
Two invisible songs + beginning the show/ending the show with VU related greatness + one long overdue track request fulfilled = a successful show for Whitney!
Thanks for listening/reading.
See you next week.
21 July
So I’ve got the third week blues. Our only call this week was a lovely one, telling us that our banter made the caller smile, but we still would love if more people called us. The 2-6 hours are getting a little easier for me (aided by a great pre-show nap), but harder for Whit. He seems to need a lot more sleep than I do. At least we finally found the Twin Peaks theme song to lead of the...

Whitney and I’s second show went infinitely smoother than last week, but we had a lot less phone calls. Hopefully we’ll get more requests in upcoming shows. On the divorce front, it looks like we might survive another day as a married couple. Who knew.
Here’s what went down.
As usual, we each picked a song to top off the show.
Whitney’s tracks are in bold.

So Whit and I had our first show the other night. We didn’t kill each other, or get a pre-emptive divorce so I would say things are going swimmingly. I don’t have a playlist for Monday night and I believe said list has been lost in the CJSW ethers but I promise to make an effort to post the list next week. Don’t count on Whitney for things like this though, he is notoriously...
