My first feature this week was Sun City Girls. They are one of the freakiest bands of all time featuring the likes of Alan Bishop, Richard Bishop and Charles Gocher. They are American underground outsider revolutionaries.

March 2

This week, I did a feature on the CD86 compilation. It is the remastered/expanded CD version of the original classic cassette put out by NME magazine in 1986. It is a great account for independent music after the first rush of punk and post punk releases which kicked off the early 80s. If you ever come across the original cassette, pick it up, it is soooo rare…

The other feature was tracks from the Wire magazine’s Below the Radar compilation that is a free download for subscribers. The Wire magazine is a British magazine which focuses on the most interesting music being made these days.

F-E-B-2-3

Thanks for reading everyone!

We did a jazz feature this week as I got a great Coltrane box set in the mail from Veronica’s dad. It is a great mix of stuff that was from the period in Coltrane’s career before he starting fronting his own bands. The other reason we featured jazz is because our friend Andrew Waller of Breaking the Tethers is no longer hosting the show after us due to the programming changes. We’ll miss seeing him each week, but we’re excited because we can actually listen to his show now. My jazz set was entirely comprised of John Coltrane. Veronica played a mix of jazz stuff in all kinds of jazz sub-genres.

I also did a feature on So Young But So Cold. It is a compilation of underground cold wave/dark wave/synth wave from France from 1977-1983. It is a great compilation put out by tigersuhi records.

We closed the show with Rhys Chatham’s Die Donnergotter. SEEK THIS OUT IF YOU DON’T HAVE IT! It is classic no-wave/minimal composition/20th century stuff.

Here’s the playlist. Enjoy.

FEB 1/6/2/0/1/0

Hi everyone, this was our playlist from Feb 16. We got into a discussion about supporting local music before our show started, so we made an effort to showcase more local music, especially this time around.

I did one feature on the “I Ate Your Legs” compilation. It is a compilation of mostly local area Vancouver music, put out by Thankless Records, a Vancouver based record label.

http://www.myspace.com/thanklessrecords

I also book ended the show with mini features on the “Freedom Rhythm & Sound” compilation, which is a fairly recently released Soul Jazz records comp featuring revolutionary jazz and Fire Music between the years of ‘63 and ‘82.

I promise to make the blog good again. We won’t just dump our playlists anymore, we’ll try to give as much background info as possible.

I started the show off with the New York Jazz compilation Wildflowers. It was a compilation based around the loft performances in the Soho and Noho districts of Manhattan. There were near 100 musicians caught on these recordings which were put out on 5 LPs originally and then remastered to 3 CDs. For more information, go here…

http://www.onefinalnote.com/features/2000/wildflowers/

I managed to find time for my feature on three of the Vienna composers: Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Schoenberg was famous for developing atonality and the twelve-tone technique. The three propose three distinct versions of the Viennese school of thought. Although they were all forward thinking composers for their time, Berg was most heavily rooted in the traditions of past compositional styles, while Webern was perhaps the least accessible. Schoenberg could be found somewhere in the middle. Canadian pianist Glenn Gould talks about the dynamic of the three composers in an interview.
