I started the show off with the New York Jazz compilation Wildflowers. It was a compilation based around the loft performances in the Soho and Noho districts of Manhattan. There were near 100 musicians caught on these recordings which were put out on 5 LPs originally and then remastered to 3 CDs. For more information, go here…

I managed to find time for my feature on three of the Vienna composers: Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Schoenberg was famous for developing atonality and the twelve-tone technique. The three propose three distinct versions of the Viennese school of thought. Although they were all forward thinking composers for their time, Berg was most heavily rooted in the traditions of past compositional styles, while Webern was perhaps the least accessible. Schoenberg could be found somewhere in the middle. Canadian pianist Glenn Gould talks about the dynamic of the three composers in an interview.
